When looking to build your new website for your business, one of the first things that might come to mind is what CMS should I use. You might think about using Wordpress as of 2018, its estimated that 30% off all websites are using Wordpress.
So why use Umbraco cms if Wordpress is so popular. Well, first of watch the promotional video by Umbraco below before I continue.
Just like Wordpress, Umbraco cms is open source, so its free and requires no licence and is widely supported, it's also mature and stable, but unlike Wordpress, Umbraco cms is designed to run on the .NET stack, so you can rest assured that the platform is extremely secure.
So you may be asking, why use Umbraco cms instead of Wordpress for your web design. Remember earlier I mentioned that Wordpress is running about 30% off all websites and its open source, this is the problem, there are about 50,000 plugins built for Wordpress to make life easier for you and this is a big selling point for Wordpress, but it's also a big security issue, some of these plugins have poor support and when Wordpress updates the core, its possible that these plugins may cause security vulnerabilities. To put this into context, since 2012 Wordpress released 34 security updates and millions of websites have been hacked due to security issues, in the same period Umbraco cms released 12 security updates and I don't think they have been hacked yet by a vulnerability in Umbraco.
Also the more plugins you add to your Wordpress site, the slower your site will become, these plugins may be free, but they do come at a cost of site speed, and if Wordpress updates it core code, then some plugins may make your site unusable if not updated.
After mentioning the security issues with Wordpress, what about the back office.
The back office in the Umbraco CMS is well thought out, as you can see from the image above, the layout is very easy to follow compared to Wordpress below that, in my opinion, looks cluttered.
So I have discussed security and the back office, what about hosting. Your Umbraco cms website can be hosted on Microsoft Azure, Amazon and Umbraco cloud, which is basically Microsoft Azure or any other Windows Server so long as your host allows it.
So it all comes down to why use Umbraco for your cms, well if you are looking for a fully fledged content management system that is secure, runs on the .NET framework and has an easy to use back office, then I believe Umbraco is for you.
Also, the website development can be fully bespoke, Umbraco does not tie you down to using themes, so the site can be designed to however you want.
